La Conner Retirement Inn Resident Gertrude "Trudy" Newton Turns 100

La Conner Retirement Inn will be throwing Gertrude “Trudy” Newton a party for her 100th birthday on November 2nd.  Newton, a former staff member of La Conner Retirement Inn, has long-time ties to the community.  La Conner Retirement Inn is a Radiant Senior Living Community.

“I have a very strong connection to the La Conner Retirement Inn. I’ve watched the groundbreaking from the first shovel in the dirt, the building coming up, I worked here, and now I live here. I was here four years as the front-desk receptionist and I sort of did it all,” says Trudy.

Trudy was born in Detroit, MI and came out west when she was married to her husband who served in the Navy during World War II.

“One of the best memories I have was living in Hawaii where my husband was stationed. It was during the war, so we had to be aware of everything, and I worked for the government during that time. It was a scary time, but it had good times as well,” says Trudy.

Trudy has found many friends at La Conner Retirement Inn. Her key to living to be 100 is being involved. Trudy is busy from breakfast to dinner with all the activities and excursions. She loves to play Po-Ke-No and comes to every stretch class. Trudy never goes anywhere without a book in her hand, catching up on the latest news, and sitting and talking with people. She also attends all of the lectures and educational events put on by the Retirement Inn.

“Being active and involved is the key, and always learning; you are never too old to learn,” she says.

“We are so fortunate to be able to have such interesting people living in our community. When you consider the amazing changes from 1916 to 2016, it’s like living history through their eyes,” said Executive Director, Jennifer Dennis.
